The Annual Swim Forum gained Fort Lauderdale notoriety amongst the college crowd since the 1930s. In 1953, city leaders actually issued invitations to college students to enjoy local hospitality; 10,000 students accepted. By 1954 attendance was so great Holiday magazine named Fort Lauderdale "the greatest college town in the country." Gene Hyde Collection.
